Upcoming Stamp Shows in Manhattan

Manhattan has been a magnet for stamp dealers and collectors, still is, what with at least two stamp clubs - the International Stamp Club and the more upscale Collectors Club in their listed townhouse just off of Madison Avenue. But with the high rents and lack of parking, due to bad city planning, it has become very hard to stage a large event here. True, the largest in the world was at the Javits in 2016. And that had dealers flocking like pilgrims to Mecca, shelling out at least $5,500 to have a booth. The shows at the former Holiday Inn on West 57th and at the Hilton on West 53rd are gone now. You can thank the city council, which spends more time welcoming terrorists who have killed and maimed American citizens than it does stamp collectors who spend money with American citizens. Don't ask the former speaker to work on behalf of Americans. And don't ask any of the council members to support a stamp show. That has to come about from other sources, and it just might. A spot has been found, a very pleasant spot - one block from Central Park at 77th Street, where there is a market each Sunday and where the patrons are known to buy stamps, postcards, coins and covers. There is an outdoor section and more appropriately for stamps an inside section as well. Thousands of people pass by each day, making this a visible location. And being a bit uptown, but very accessible by major trains buses, it will be more affordable than the previous shows for the dealers. The Grand Bazaar it's called, and it looks like there may be a show there if not this summer, then by September. So we will keep you posted on the progress here and interested parties may email us at nycphilatelic@gmail.com

Bill Gross collection on the block in New York

A large part of bond investor Bill Gross' $42 million stamps collection - which he began building after a collection his mom gave him as a high school graduation present turned out to be worth less than its face value - will be on the block in October at Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries in New York City. Charles Shreve, Gross' philately adviser and director of the auction house, noted that his client collected stamps to prove that his mother was right - that buying stamps can be fun and make money. She just bought the wrong ones. Gross is a co-founder of of PIMCO, one of the world's largest bond managers, and is worth $2.5 billion according to Forbes. He quit the Newport Beach, California based firm in 2014 and joined Janus Henderson Investors, where he runs a $2.1 billion bond fund. On the block will be a block of six mint US #2s. While I'm not a bidder, not even an under bidder on this, I can at least be a viewer. And here's where I can catch a glimpse of these rarities before they get snatched up: Robert A. Eagles on stamps: A list of 42 species of eagles with Scott #s

Thematic, or topical collecting, is growing as more nations issue theme stamps, sometimes making up sets that contain scientific rarities and actually serve a purpose to someone making a study of their topic. One favourite topic worldwide is birds, of which there are tens of thousands of stamps, rannging from iconic to paintings to photographs. Eagles are perhaps the most widely depicted of all birds, of the 48 or so species of these raptors some 42 or more are known to be on stamps. A list was made recently of these, done by species and using, when known, Scott numbers.
